The Slovak Athletic Federation has organized many successful events in the past, including the 1997 World Half Marathon Championships in Košice, three editions of the European Walking Cup in Dudince (1998, 2001, 2013), while Banská Bytrica hosted various categories of the European Team Championships six times. On 10th December, the European Cross Country Championships organised in Šamorín will be added to this list. Given the current number of registered athletes, a new record could be on the horizon.
“800 athletes from 35 countries are planning on coming to Šamorín and it looks like we might see a record number of endurance runners competing in one of the seven categories of the event. So far, Belgrade welcomed the highest number of runners - 525 - in 2013. There are 582 athletes in the preliminary applications, and even though this number could decrease by 5 to 10 percent, which is usually the case, this could be a new record in the history of the event,” said the chief of the organisational committee Peter Korčok.
For the first time in the history of the European Championships, the event will feature a run for the public, which has been appreciated by the European Athletics Committee. “We would like to encourage running enthusiasts to visit the modern x-bionic® sphere and offer them an unforgettable experience,” said Korčok.
